Back to the Basics

You know what I love about living in Laos so far?…… the food! (of course). BUT the food is different. Everything you find for “fast food” on the streets is fruits, vegetables, grilled corn on the cob, grilled fish on sticks, meats, etc. There is nothing fake about anything in your food here. You don’t even have to think about what is “added” because they don’t use additives, preservatives, and sweeteners.

Imported foods – packaged snacks (e.g. chips, breakfast cereals, chocolate bars, candy etc) are much more expensive to buy than the organic fresh fruit and vegetables found lining the streets. This is the complete opposite of home. It is disappointing that eating healthy and fresh foods in Canada is a challenge due to expensive pricing. I am so lucky to be living in a country where locally grown fresh vegetables and fruits are readily available.

peanuts

As you can see in the photo above – nuts (peanuts) are not scarce here. Peanuts salted/honey roasted are found in many restaurants on tables as a little snack while you are waiting.

Additionally, it is cheaper to eat out for meals than to buy many (traditional) groceries like I would at home and cook. So far I have tried lots of rice paper vegetable wraps, curries, stir fries, and many amazing soups. I have loved every meal I have had so far — EXCEPT a papaya salad which has a strong fish oil flavour (not my thing).

…. Also almost ran into this guy infront of me (see below) when I was walking home.
