I find that the beetroot doesn’t get as much attention as it deserves. So why should you consume more beets in your diet?
Beets contain iron. Iron is an extremely important mineral of the body. Oxygen binds to iron to be transported throughout our bodies. Also, iron helps with brain development in the early stages of life.
Signs of Iron deficiency? When your skin is pale and you are constantly feeling tired and fatigued this could mean you are low in iron.
You may need more iron if you are vegetarian, give blood, are an endurance athlete, or if you have a certain disease/condition.
Other benefits of the beetroot?
- Great source of fibre.
- Found in some studies to increase the level of antioxidant enzymes in the body.
- Plays a role in increasing white blood cell production. WBC’s are a main component of our immune systems and fighting off infection.
- Beets are a rich source of the amino acid glutamine (a building block of protein).
- A new study published through Dietitians of Canada also found that consuming beets improved running performance in a group of runners. Check it out here.
